Auditions

General Audition Information

Interested in performing on stage with Way Way Off-Broadway?  Auditions are held prior to each show that WWOB produces, and is open for anyone to try out.  Previous performing experience is not required, all we ask is that you are willing to dedicate the considerable time and effort it takes for rehearsals and performances, so that we can put on the very best show that we can.  DISCLAIMER:  With so many talented people auditioning for our shows, our Production Teams are faced with the difficult task of casting a show with the right people.  Regardless of any previous conversations with, or comments from, members of the Production Team, everyone must participate in the audition process, and no one is assigned a role until auditions are complete.  Occasionally, certain roles or productions will be assigned prior to or without holding open auditions; however, this will not occur unless specifically announced by WWOB.

The Audition Process

Your audition process will begin with you singing a song of your choosing with an accompanying track (played from your phone or USB device). For some productions you may also be asked to participate in a brief dance routine as part of your audition process (nothing will be too difficult and previous experience is not necessary).  Typically, these initial auditions take place over two days.

At the conclusion of the initial auditions, some auditionees will be asked to come back for a Callback Audition, where you may be assigned to sing songs or read lines from the actual show.  Once callbacks are completed, the production team will cast the show.  It’s worth noting that being asked to participate in callbacks does not guarantee a spot on the final cast list, and final casting decisions are ultimately the responsibility of the production’s director and company Artistic Director.

You only need to attend one of these audition dates, and can audition for one or both shows.

Please note – the gender, age and vocal range indications refer to the CHARACTER, not the PERFORMER. Therefore, if an performer appears to be in the age range, can convincingly portray the gender of the character, and meet the vocal requirements of the character, they may be considered for a character regardless of their age or gender.

Character Breakdown – BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Belle
Female, age 25-30. Belle is the story’s heroine – smart, compassionate, assertive, and brave. She values her freedom and individuality and is considered an oddity in her village because of her love for books and her disdain for Gaston’s advances.

Beast
Male, age 30+. The Beast is a Prince who was transformed into a monstrous creature by an enchantress as a punishment for his arrogance. Beneath his beastly exterior, he struggles with his need for love and acceptance.

Gaston
Male, age 30+. Gaston is the story’s antagonist – a handsome, muscular, and extremely narcissistic hunter who is relentless in his pursuit of Belle. His self-centeredness is highlighted by his belief that Belle should naturally want to marry him.

LeFou
Male, age 18-25. LeFou is Gaston’s comical sidekick who idolizes Gaston and is always trying to stay in his good graces. He provides comic relief but also shows a level of fear towards Gaston.

Maurice
Male, age 50+. Maurice is Belle’s eccentric father. He is an inventor and is seen as a bit odd by the townsfolk, but he shares a deep, loving bond with Belle.

Lumière
Male, age 30+. Lumière is the castle’s maitre d’ turned into a candelabra. He is charming, warm, and romantic, with a suave French accent.

Cogsworth
Male, age 40+. Cogsworth, the castle’s fastidious and nervous majordomo turned into a clock, constantly battles with Lumière over the rules and order.

Mrs. Potts
Female, age 40+. Mrs. Potts is the castle’s kind and motherly housekeeper turned into a teapot.

Chip
Male, age 8-10. Chip is Mrs. Potts’ son, an energetic and inquisitive young boy turned into a teacup. His innocence and optimism brighten the castle.

Madame de la Grande Bouche
Female, age 30+. A former opera diva turned into a wardrobe, she yearns for the days of glamour and provides comic relief to the her over the top theatrical behavior.

Babette
Female, age 20-30. Babette is the flirtatious maid of the castle turned into a feather duster.

Silly Girls
Female, age 18-25. These 3 girls are always fighting for Gaston’s attention and jealous of Belle for the attention she gets from Gaston. All 3 will also portray enchanted objects in the ensemble as well.

Monsieur D’arque
Male, age 40+. The scheming proprietor of the insane asylum. He is a dark sinister villain that schemes with Gaston. This actor will also portray an enchanted object and villager in the ensemble as well.

Character Breakdown – INTO THE WOODS

Narrator/Mysterious Man
Male, age 40+. Narrator is an intellectual and pleasant story-teller who helps to orchestrate the show and illustrate lessons to the audience.   Mysterious Man is a mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler. He is a good-natured protector and observer

Cinderella
Female, age 20 to 30. A young, earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters.

Jack
Male, age 16 to 20. The feckless giant killer who is ‘almost a man.’ He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed.

Jack’s Mother
Female, age 40+. Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed.

The Baker
Male, age 35 to 45. A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles.

The Baker’s Wife
Female, age: 35 to 45. Determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive in her endeavors.

Cinderella’s Stepmother
Female, age 40 to 50. The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella.

Florinda and Lucinda
Female. Cinderella’s stepsisters who are black of heart. They follow in their mother’s footsteps of abusing Cinderella.

Little Red Riding Hood
Female, age 18 to 25. A spoiled young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, yet youthful and naive.

The Witch
Female, age 35 to 55. Sarcastic, ugly- then-gorgeous, obsessive protector of Rapunzel who is straightforward and aggressive.

Cinderella’s Mother
Female. Deceased with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree. This role will also portray Granny and the voice of the Giant.

Wolf
Male. Male, age 30+. Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey.

Cinderella’s Prince
Male, age 30 to 40. Vain and gorgeous, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing.

Rapunzel
Female, age 18 to 25. A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world.

Rapunzel’s Prince
Male, age 25 to 40. Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exiting endeavor.

The Steward
Male, age 30 to 50. A man-servant who is used to doing whatever he has to solve a problem. His only care is to please his master or the strongest personality in the room. Conniving, callous and cowardly.

Cinderella’s Father
Male, age 50+. Out of touch with his family but harmless and well-meaning.
